Community Canopy Kit & Fundraiser
6th Street Studios & Art Center provides outdoor space for local artists/artisans, musicians, and youth for marketplace sales, camps, classes, concerts and more. Our current outdoor space is open to the elements and can be an uncomfortable, and hot area for its occupants in the spring, summer and fall.
Help us transform space into a safe and comfortable creative venue where people can work, celebrate and create without the risk of overheating from the afternoon sun, while beautifying the space and celebrating the beautiful art of crocheting and knitting.
Are you a fiber artist who loves to knit or crochet? Join us in creating individual 24x24 squares to construct the community-created canopy. Many thanks to Anika Mathewson for leading this creative project!
Purchase one (or more ) 6th Studios & Art Center canopy kits, which includes: yarn, optional knitting needles/crochet hooks and instructions for the square, plus other additional options of "made by" tags, a special pattern, or sponsorship of your square. Your donation of time and money fundraises for the cost of materials and the labor to safely install the canopy. (It is also tax-deductible.)
We will be collecting over 500 squares nationwide of the next year. We encourage you to challenge yourself with fun and exciting patterns to make your square stand out amongst the 1100 square feet of squares that will be suspended over our outdoor area.
Keep in touch to learn more about our fundraising efforts for the installation, and the HUGE unveiling party we will have upon completion. This will be the biggest public art display in the city of Gilroy, possibly all of South County!
Completed Kit/Square Drop Off Instructions:
Completed Squares can be dropped off at Gallery 1202 during open business hours:
Tuesday-Thursday 10 AM -4 PM
Friday & Saturday 12 PM - 6 PM
Sunday 11 AM -5 PM
